Atta girl

Hey everyone, let's give some props to our girl at Antidisingenuousmentarianism for her letter to the editor.

She takes Elton Dodson to task for, well, not really wanting to be open with his constituents.

Safe to say that lots of the good feelings I've had for our commission has plunged southward in recent days.

Ah-ha! It was only a matter of time.

Yeah, it's been frustrating. I still think they're good folks who mean well, but meaning well and then practicing good policy are two different things.

The smoking ban, the proposed moratorium, the sign ordinance and the furor around the tree canopy ordinance all happened too quickly for me to process. Seems to me that the commission spends all this time to try and work on a compromise and then, as soon as it's passed, they proceed to stab those they worked with in the back and push through a more stringent ordinance (see smoking ban and the recent tree canopy developments).

Uh-oh, there's more weirdness going on? What are these "tree canopy developments" of which you speak?

The tree canopy developments are that the commission appointed a committee of business leaders, environmental leaders and community activists in an attempt to develop a plan to increase the tree canopy in the community. They spent a year or so working on it, and the commission passed a decent compromise which wouldn't overly restrict business and economic development, but also made a push to increase tree canopy from X percent to Y percent. There were lots of other things involved - such as number of feet permitted between clear-cutting, etc.

Most folks thought it was a good deal.

The damn thing hasn't even gone into effect yet, and Carl Jordan is already pushing to make it tougher. Apparently he - and others on the commission - don't want to abide by these compromises which the overwhelming majority of the town preferred. Why do that when you can govern from the extremes and ignore the wishes of your consituents?

I am glad to see you are now starting to see what has been painfully obvious to many others in this community. Kind of Orwellian, the way they operate.
