Communication issues

Can someone in the advertising department of the Banner-Herald take that difficult 20-foot walk and tell the newsroom that States McCarter is running for mayor? I mean, those ads are finished by 5 p.m ... how in the world does that just slip past them?

Of course, someone should have told McCarter he could have saved some campaign funds by announcing his candidacy through a press release and a free news story rather than pony up the money for an ad littered with grammatical mistakes (you don't 'insure' an inclusive and responsive government - unless you want to financially protect it - you 'ensure' an inclusive and responsive government).

Anywho ... McCarter's officially in the game now and the mayoral watch falls on Heidi. On pure speculation, I think she may sit this one out. Of course, with McCarter and Tom Chasteen splitting the eastside, the westside is seeking a candidate.

Damn. This would be what I miss out on by only reading the paper online. I'd love to see a scan.

I just don't know how the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing over there. Of course, the same is probably true at most places of employment.

Ad was great, though. The wife was the first one to point out 'isn't that using insure wrong?' Quite funny.

So, do we like States McCarter or not?

Tell me what to think!

States has good qualities and bad qualities.

On the plus side, he is very responsive to the community. He's probably the best commissioner when it comes to accepting invitations to attend events and he manages to show up and almost every gathering out there. He's been very supportive of IHN and has attended several of our functions. He's a big reason why we got CDBG funding.

On the negative side, he has been part of the voting bloc that has helped enact several restrictive ordinances on downtown and, like many officials in our government, don't work hard enough to put issues of poverty, affordable housing and greenspace preservation on the forefront. Plus, lots of his positions often appear to be hindering to economic growth in the county (but that's just my opinion).

So it's a tough call. My boy ATL's Finest has strong feelings against McCarter, so he might be able to enlighten us even further. I like McCarter on a personal level, but I'm not sold on him as a commissioner nor as mayor.

Good summary, JMac. Basically, he's kind of an old fogey, but he's a really committed old fogey.

"Insure" is sort of acceptable these days in place of "ensure," but obvs the latter is preferred.
