The blogosphere strikes back

Ah, we are a tad elitist aren't we?

A little while back, in an article discussing money raised by the Athens-Clarke County mayoral candidates, the Athens Banner-Herald revealed that Charlie Maddox had spent roughly $2,500 on his campaign web site. Said web site, quite frankly, leaves much to be desired.

And folks in the Athenian blogosphere don't think Maddox got enough bang for his buck. Adrian at Athens World questions the money spent, while Publius at Athens Politics has similar issues.

It is a bit puzzling. I almost expect exploding fireballs in the upper corners of the page. And I hope you have Powerpoint if you want to know where Maddox stands on the issues ... because if you don't, you can't access his link to find out what it takes to lead Athens-Clarke County.

Gosh ... the more I look at it, the more lousy I think the site is.

You're not elitist, you're just sensible and know a shitty web site that looks like it just escaped from 1996 when you see one.

If I had contributed to that dude's campaign, I would demand my portion of that $2,500 back. Looks like he "hired" a homeless guy in a public library (cost: 375 ml of bourbon) to "design" the site and pocketed the cash.

I'm not elitist at all. I'm going to count Mr. Maddox in the sphere of political websites in Athens for now, and say this.

AthPo is hard work, as is your blog, Hillary's blog, and AthensWorld, to name a few. We try to update content every day, and while 99% of the html and stuff is done for us thanks to Blogger, we pride ourselves on turning out good, semi-regular content.

In short, we take pride in turning out a good product. Maddox should do the same, because right now, his product is shoddy. To people who use these kinds of factors to evaluate a candidate, it makes them look out of touch with our demographic, and generally kind of unprofessional and slipshod.
