Apples and oranges

There's a lot of discussion going on about the redevelopment of Jekyll Island, and I've received a couple of emails in the past few weeks, presumably because the legislative session is gearing up. Safe to say, I ultimately agree with the folks who are sending me the emails in that the proposed development by Linger Longer Properties is something which will be contrary to not only the wishes of the people of Jekyll Island, but also the stated mission of the Jekyll Island Master Plan.

The island was set aside by the state in the middle of the 20th century in an attempt to not only preserve the environment, but also provide affordable vacation options for all citizens of Georgia. The development by Linger Longer partially meets the first goal and figures to fail the second.

And, truth be told, the actual proposed development by Linger Longer isn't necessarily that bad. The problem is that it's wrong for Jekyll Island based on the master plan.

Jeez Louise, what makes anyone think that the 'master plan' contains the best development for Jekyll Island? The master plan! The master plan!

What Jekyll needs is more water parks. And more Dennys' where you can get a nice hot cup of jack. squat. You know what I'm talkin' about.

Seriously, though, Jekyll Island was the site of the original meeting of the rich-and-powerful where the Federal Reserve was created. I say burn it.

The proposed Linger Longer beach village" is wrong for Jekyll Island STATE NPARK. And forget about what the residents of Jekyll island want. It is the people of the state of Georgia that own the park and they have made their feelings clear in a survey conducted by the Initiative to Protect Jekyll island (IPJI)(www.savejekyllisland.org). They want to see the hotels fixed up with some more family dining opportunites. If a new convention center and convention hotel is needed OK. BUT, the people have said loud and clear that they don't want the open beach taken away for them for the sake of pricey condos, time shares and more hotels. Redevelop in the exisiting foot print. Move the convention center and convention hotel off the beach. STAY AWAY from environmentally sensitive areas. To help make all this happen visit the website of the IPJI, fill out their survey and go to Senator Jeff Chapman's website www.jeffchapman.us to sign his resolution calling for the protection of direct beach access within Jekyll Island State Park and to offer suggestions for legislation for Jekyll. By the way. Chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority Board went on the record the other day in an article in a Camden County paper saying a Ritz Carlton Hotel is an option for Jekyll. Way to go Chairman Porter...how does that square with Jekyll's founding legislation that Jekyll's facilities be affordable to the average Georgian. All the hotels to be rebuilt are going up in price and the Days Inn is being bought by Linger Longer's Mercer Reynolds. Guess we'll soon have to call the park Jekyll Island: Reynold's Plantation on the Coast!
