The Eyes of Texas

I could say 'I told you so' and point out that Vince Young is the best player in college football, but his 467-total-yard performance in the Rose Bowl has kinda already done that for me. Not that I'm really that big of a Texas fan, but it was really nice to see Southern Cal lose for a change.

And, I'm taking a poll here, but was that the best college football game you've ever seen? The 2002 Ohio State-Miami game was great, as was the Colorado-Michigan game with the Kordel Stewart 'Hail Mary,' but the Longhorns' win tonight might be the best I've witnessed in a long, long time.

As far as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft ... if the Houston Texans are content in getting Eric Metcalf, er, Reggie Bush with their selection, that's fine. I'd rather snag Young. Heck, I'd rather take LenDale White if we're ranking USC backs.

I mean ... 267 passing yards and 200 rushing yards? Are you kidding me?

Modify to "best college football game you've ever seen if you're really not into defense"?

Miami-Ohio State 2002 was really, really good. I think the fact that it went to overtime makes it better, but only slightly.

And that game featured two very awesome defenses to go along with adept offensive play.

Great game, and I'm glad I stayed up. Is there any question that Young is the #1 draft pick now? I can think of a number of NFL teams that need a new QB, not so many that really need a new RB.

Here's a couple of other random things I noticed from the game, as well as the other BCS games.

First of all, I really hope that ABC is going to invite Ed Rendell on to give him 30 seconds of free political airtime, since they pretty much let Lynn Swann practice his stump speech at the end of the Sugar Bowl telecast.

I thought Leinart was kind of a douche during his post-game interview when he said that he still thought USC was a better team, and Texas just made more plays.

I thought Saunders was kind of a douche for putting Vince Young on the spot immediately after the game with respect to going pro.

Mack Brown is a class act. So is Pete Carroll.

Honestly, if I'm an NFL scout, I lean toward LenDale White over Reggie Bush. I just don't think Bush is an every down back, and why would you use the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft to pick up a kick returner/slot receiver/running-back-good-for-10-carries-a-game?

I'm not hating on Bush - he's an absurdly good football player who was the second-best college football player in the country - but I'm just trying to be realistic. With Vince Young, he needs to work on his throwing motion and his deep ball, but he's arguably the most talented quarterback on the market. I don't, however, think he's going to turn pro. He wants to win another title and get the Heisman Trophy ... and Texas will be loaded next year. All of their skill players are freshmen or sophomores and with Young at the helm again, they'll roll.

And, yes, Leinhart was an absolute punk. Show some class. I know it's been hard when you haven't lost in three years, but come on. Did you catch Holly Rowe calling him 'Vince' upon the end of the interview?

I would definitely take LenDale White over Bush, given a choice between the two. But I'd take Vince uber alles.

The sucky thing about Leinart being a punk-ass bitch is that I had started off the first quarter telling the S.O. that I had read an interview with him and seemed like a decent, down-to-earth kind of guy.

Technically, you could say I saw Belue to Scott (at 8-months old, my father was rocking me to sleep, and really, really fast as the stadium fell apart), but on the chance that my eyes were shut ...

This year's rose was pretty incredible, not only for matching the hype, but for what it meant — first title Texas in 1,000 years; first loss for USC in 1,000 years.

Best game I ever attended? 1998 No. 11 UGA beats No. 6 LSU down on the Bayou. Donnan rallies the troups to him in the fourth quarter, Quincy leads the drive. Best game of his life (yeah, he was a freshman). Champ saved his ass several times. The letdown? The very next week No. 3 UT comes to Sanford to play No. 6 UGA. GameDay is there for the first time in Athens. UT 20, UGA 3. Some guy named Travis Henry, playing in place of some guy named Jamal Lewis (torn ACL) inihilated the Dogs' defensive front. My dad and I cried afterward. It was a moment.
