Smelling like Roses

Photo by Kelly Lambert of the Athens Banner-Herald

One of my dreams, long thought to be impossible, has been to see Georgia play in the Rose Bowl. Seeing how it's been 60-plus years since that has happened (a 9-0 win over UCLA to capture the 1942 national championship) and the Big Ten and Pac-10 have long had traditional tie-ins to that game, it's been close to impossible to secure a berth in the nation's most famous bowl game.

However, with the dawn of the BCS and the additional BCS Championship Game, it's more likely for teams from other conferences to land in that game. And now, on the heels of a seventh straight win over Georgia Tech, all the Bulldogs need is an Oklahoma win over Missouri to bump Ohio State into the title game and open the door for a possible berth in the 'Granddaddy Of Them All' ...

It's still a longshot, but I'm about to become the biggest Sooners fan in the country.

Of course, the Orange Bowl is a nice consolation prize. As is beating Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech in the same season for the first time since 1982.

I've always dreamed about the Dawgs at the Rose Bowl, too.

Not to nitpick, but the Dawgs had already won the national championship before the Rose Bowl game was played. Up until the early 1970s the final polls came out at the end of the regular season. Bowl games were seen entirely as exhibitions. So the 42 (actually 1/1/43) Rose Bowl was an exhibition game featuring the national champion Georgia Bulldogs vs. UCLA.

But yes, I've always had this dream as well! :-)

Oh, and one more thing...I'm still pulling for not only the Sooner win but also the West Virginia win. That MIGHT mean that....I dare not say it.

We'd need a Tennessee win too.

I have a hard time believing that if LSU won the SEC title and finished 11-2 that they wouldn't jump past us in the standings (and, at 11-2 and being SEC champs, they'd deserve it too).

Of course, West Virginia is going to destroy Pittsburgh.

So much of the formula comes down to the human polls now, though, and I'm not so sure that the humans would jump LSU that much. They are now in the back of the 2-loss line (or in the middle), and the only way that they will move up is if 2 loss teams ahead of them lose. It's just how the voters tend to be. So they would need a BIG push from the computers to pass us. Which they might get, winning the SEC and all, but I dunno.

I know that both of LSU's losses were in triple overtime but I think it's a bad reflection on them that they were even IN overtime with Kentucky and Arkansas... they don't impress me. Six weeks ago I would have worried about Georgia's chances vs. LSU and other top 10ers but right now I don't think there are many teams in the country playing better than the Dawgs. I'd LOVE to see UGA vs. LSU or anyone else in the Top 5 for that matter...
