The cold, hard truth

I'll be the one to say it ... we've got to raise taxes.

There is absolutely no way this country can pay for a war in Iraq, the other aspects of the War on Terror and the rebuilding efforts of Katrina. The administration has said it won't raise taxes and will look to cut spending, though most officials agree there is little spending to cut.

So ... we should raise taxes. It's cut and dry to me, but apparently I'm wiser than the folks in the Bush administration.

I would have no problem with raising taxes, if I supported the things my tax dollars were paying for.

The war in Iraq? Nope. Faith-based initiatives? Nope. They say making more money can turn you into a Republican - but in my case (and not like I make a ton of money, but I make more than I did as a broke college student) it has made me even more staunch of a Democrat. (Or, really, progressive - I like that term better than a party affiliation.)

If we were spending money on education, healthcare, etc., then I could get behind raising taxes. As it is? I'm starting to wonder how I can most effectively dodge the IRS.

That's one reason taxes have been cut so dramatically over the past few years: people not supporting what their tax dollars pay for. You don't get to pick and choose, except through the electoral process.

The Republicans (Bush) spend too much money. I agree. And they spend it on things the government simply has no business doing (making the world safe for democracy, rebuilding U.S. cities, etc.) Democrats, to be fair, also spend too much money on things the gov't simply has no business doing.

So I'll never believe lines such as "officials agree there is little spending to cut." I mean, I believe you that there are "officials" who say just that, but I don't believe them when they say it. When do bureaucrats ever think that a program can be cut? (rhetorical question)

I assuming you don't think the federal government should help rebuild the Gulf Coast, do you? Granted, we have immense disagreements over that if that's the case ... but I want to be sure.

Of coures I'm not against government spending money to assist its citizens, so there's that.

Oh, I understand how it works. Which is why I vote like a mother-scratcher. Doesn't mean I can't be pissed at people who vote for idiots or who are too lazy to vote at all.

If the government wants the Gulf Coast rebuilt quickly and efficiently, then no, it should keep its grubby hands the heck out of it.

Remember how upset everyone is at what a disaster FEMA has been at "helping" people down there? Why do we all think that the "Commission on Gulf Coast Recovery" (or whatever) will do any better? Government is inefficient. Bureacracy gets in the way. Now we've got a polarizing president promising to rebuild New Orleans. And in 2015, some congressional committee will still be grandstanding over how many minorities should work at the company that might supply the sewer lines.

If the good people of New Orleans, Biloxi, etc., want any hope of returning to a city that people actually want to live in (in a reasonable amount of time), they had better pray that the feds don't get involved.

But it's already too late. We all feel better sending our government down there to "do some good." Whether they actually do much good or not doesn't matter.
