Couple of things

- Because rather than have a rational discussion about the efficiency of our non-profit organizations, it's easier to say this whole thing is about race.

- You know, Blake is right on this. This notion of Paul Broun wasting millions of dollars on mailings and phone calls isn't grounded in reality and, quite frankly, I kind of like the fact that a sitting congressman wants to stay in touch with his consituents. I don't share Broun's political views and will vote against him come this fall, but at least he's letting me know what he's doing, where he stands and how I can touch base with him. If you don't like the mail ... throw it away.

- Speaking of the 10th Congressional District, Erick lets us know how Barry Fleming will go after Broun, and I think both are dishonest (though that's not shocking seeing how Fleming is just resorting to the Georgia GOP establishment handbook for his election run). Broun made perfectly logical and rational decisions on his votes for medical marijuana and against the restrictions against internet pornography, and it's easy to see why he would vote the way he did. There are perfectly legitimate ways to counter Broun, but the ones pushed by Fleming are craven.

- There is a debate for the Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate seat tonight at the University of Georgia.

- In the Democratic primary, today is so much like yesterday.

- My boy Chaz sent me this, and I agree with the argument over voter demographics for younger evangelicals (seeing how I'm one of them just, well, not Republican). Of course, I don't think Jesus would vote for anyone quite frankly.

-Listen, I don't like Clarence Thomas's political views either but he's still a friggin' Supreme Court judge which more than qualifies him as someone who can speak at the University of Georgia.

- This is a bummer, so with that in mind enjoy this.

- Just a quick word to say that I got out to the Athens Regional Foundation Classic last week, and it's a bang-up event. Followed Ryan Hybl around for a few holes (interesting to note that until the ninth hole, he had made only birdies or bogies), and then watched some groups make their approach at the 14th hole. Also saw Tim Bryant in the clubhouse, and I sheepishly admit to not recognizing him until he spoke.

Okay, Blake is right that some people are overreacting to Broun's mailings, but that doesn't mean the mailings themselves are useful or anything more than a campaign piece. It is a waste of taxpayer dollars, particularly notable in a congressman who gets all huffy about exactly such. It's just not a huge waste of them.

Dude, I wish I'd have recognized you out at the ARFC. I was there with the Hybl family...the doofus with the dark grey Dockers, glasses, and the Tiger Woods hat. Here's hoping Ryan can pull off another top-25 finish in Richmond this weekend and stay on the Nationwide Tour.

Jmac, I believe you actually meant "recycle it" and not "throw it away." Just sayin'.

Tim Bryant lost a buttload of weight and last time I saw him downtown I did not recognize him, at least not without the ridiculous coaches short from FSU

Touche to The Realist. Well-played.

And I think Hillary makes a very valid point there as it's important to consider who these mailings are coming from.

Mike ... I was there on Thursday and followed him for most of the front nine before heading out to get a spot to sit at. I wish I had known! I still say we need an Athens Blogger-palooza.

On the broun mailings:

Is it wasteful? sure.

But it's a smart play from an upstart freshman congressman with less than two years to remind people he's the incumbent.

I personally doubt that anyone outside the blogosphere (oh crap, I actually used that word), really cares about this issue.

Oh, bullshit -- it's an issue that is getting play because it is legitimate.

Also, there's the old saying in customer service that the number of people who complain represent only 20% of your unsatified customers. Count me among them -- I'm really annoyed at the abuse of the franking privilege, I am sick of being told that Paul Broun is "informing me [like John Barrah nevah did]" when in fact what's he's doing is informing me of his campaign positions and eliciting my future support, and I cannot abide so damned many trees being sacrificed (in duplicate, at my house) for the purpose.

The volume of the mail is ridiculous, and the fact that he is calling me with canned propaganda outside or normal telephone harassment times is also offensive. Particularly since I have never received a response of any kind to any concern that I have breached with the good senator.

I tend to suspect people who downplay the issue work for Paul Broun.

I guess he's lost your vote, then, huh Nicki?

On a scale of 1-10, this issue--as one of importance--rates about a .05, far below the college football playoff issue.

And, no, I don't work for Team Broun.
