The future of District Eight

Blake does a nice job digging around for reasons why States McCarter resigned because, as you may have noticed, his resignation letter doesn't offer many clues. The story touches on all of those random rumors I've heard flying around.

And it sets up a showdown between two very solid and very worthy candidates in Andy Herod, a member of the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission, and David Hamilton, the president of the Cedar Creek Neighborhood Association.

David is a regular poster in these parts, and I've grown to like him very much. He's a rather pragmatic fella, and we need more of that in our political lives. I've never met Andy, but I've heard good things about him. It'll be a good - and very condensed - race for this open seat.

It's my understanding that Hamilton is States' hand picked successor. That's enough to lose my vote right there.

Not at all. That's a misconception that was put out there.

If by 'hand-picked successor' you mean 'yeah, they kinda know each other' then you would be correct. Hamilton had planned to run for that seat eventually, and McCarter just knew him. I think it was a quote taken out of context, and a way for McCarter to keep his name in the limelight.

To suggest McCarter recruited him is flat-out wrong.

What I don't understand is how good of a race can it really be with such short notice? And are the most qualified candidates going to be able to mobilize in time?

Qualifying is in less than two weeks and will only be open for 2 days (instead of the months of notice that everyone has leading up to a regular election and a qualifying period that last for a week.) Though it seems that the two most likely candidates (presidents of the two largest neighborhood associations) will be running - the 8th District is far more encompassing than those two neighborhoods - something that Comm. McCarter never quite understood and I think lead to a lot of his collation building problems for issues that he felt strongly on.

I agree. It's going to be mighty hectic, though both Herod and Hamilton are sharp fellas who will do well. It is a shame we won't have at least two months or so to have them hash out their opinions and stances.

I'll try to get both of them involved here. Hamilton posts here, and maybe (?!) Herod has read this little ole blog once or twice.

What's also interesting is that, in two years, you might get to see this replayed again since this is a special election to fill the vacancy.

Is it not true that Hamilton supported Charlie Maddox over Heidi? Just another rumor I had heard.

I know he supported her in the runoff, but may have backed Maddox in the general. I don't know for sure.

Hamilton gave campaign cash during the general to Charlie, then later gave to Heidi.

I knew the money aspect, and from what I can gather he switched his vote as well, though this is pure speculation on my part based on some observations of mine.

As an aside ... are you the same anonymous poster or a different one? I'm getting confused.
